Biography

Dr. Youssef Bou Issa is an Associate Professor at Antonine University (UA) in Lebanon. He earned his MS in Computer and Communications Engineering from UA in 2005 and, his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toulouse, France, in 2010. His research focuses on computer-human interaction, with a particular emphasis on accessibility for blind users.

Dr. Bou Issa’s main research objective is to explore new interaction techniques and methods that can improve the experience of disabled individuals. Specifically, he aims to develop models and technologies that enhance computer-human interaction for blind users. This involves translating hidden visual information into tactile and/or auditory formats, not only by providing technological tools but also by studying the fundamental concepts of trans-modalities.

Initially, his work involved the transformation of visual information into tactile/audio formats, and then he worked on transforming shapes into vibrations using vibrating touch screens. Another study in this subject concerns the conjunction of visual pointing techniques and rules with non-visual pointing on vibrating touch screens. Currently, he is engaged in a new type of visual information, which consists of analyzing postures and gestures of individuals in order to translate them or decipher their psychological meaning for blind users.

Collaborating with Ellipse team in IRIT France, Dr. Bou Issa is also investigating pointing techniques in a 3D environment. The objective of this research is to propose a new technique that optimizes the time spent on selecting a target in a 3D environment.

In 2018, in collaboration with the FEMTO-ST Lab in France, Dr. Bou Issa embarked on a new research project focused on outdoor navigation for blind users, highlighting the relationship between stress levels and interaction with road obstacles. The research team aimed to develop adaptive technologies that could intuitively adjust to the user’s stress markers, providing real-time navigational assistance that is sensitive to the user’s tension state. The research involved creating algorithms capable of perceiving and interpreting users’ stress levels while considering environmental obstacles to ensure safe navigation.

Research Outline

Assistive technologies play a crucial role in enhancing the daily lives of people with disabilities. To effectively design and implement such tools, it is essential to address the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in great detail. In the case of blind people, the loss of visual information can lead to various physical and mental well-being problems. Therefore, the restoration of hidden information holds significant promise as a field of research. The outcomes of such research can have the potential to be integrated into many computer-human interaction areas.

Zahi Al Chami

Biography

Dr. Zahi Al Chami earned his BS in Physics from the Lebanese University (LU) in 2012. He then transferred to Antonine University (UA) to pursue his education and graduated as a software engineer in 2017. Following his graduation, he embarked on a research career with an internship at UA’s TICKET Lab, working on a collaborative project entitled “Protecting multimedia documents while assessing their quality” in partnership with the Lebanese American University (LAU). Subsequently, he enrolled in a PhD program in computer science, which he completed in December 2021 at the University of Pau and Adour Countries in France.

Throughout his past and current research endeavors, Dr. Al Chami’s interests have primarily focused on 2 areas: real-time estimation of the image quality and enhancement and reconstruction of damaged image quality. In addition, he has recently delved into the field of “microservices” and is actively involved in building new models for converting monolithic architectures to microservices.

In terms of teaching experience, Dr. Al Chami started his career as a part-time Lecturer at UA in 2017, before being promoted to a full-time position, after 5 years, as an Assistant Professor. Some of the main courses he has taught include CCNA Introduction to Networks, Computer Vision, Web Programming (PHP), Object-oriented Programming, Mobile Development, Data Structures, and Programming C++.
