  • MOU Signing Between UA and “STOP Plastique”

    11 May 2022

As Antonine University (UA) is committed to promoting solidarity and proactive citizenship through sustainable actions by nurturing creative initiatives, it is delighted to have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the “STOP Plastique” Association in order to encourage students to adopt the most suitable measures to counter the adverse effects of plastic use and poor waste management at the environmental, social, and economic levels.

“STOP Plastique” is a non-profit association aiming to raise awareness among citizens to change their way of life by proposing alternatives to get rid of plastic and fight against pollution. For this purpose, the Association organizes diverse workshops, conferences, and large-scale garbage collection, in addition to working with policymakers and scientists to reduce the use of plastic products.

In order to cater to the needs of each community, “STOP Plastique” is developing throughout France and abroad, where volunteers are joining in order to carry out actions in their respective countries among which Lebanon, Thailand, Guinea, French Polynesia, and soon Egypt and the USA.

The 2-year agreement between both parties follows an intervention made by “STOP Plastique” during a webinar dedicated to UA students enrolled in the “Citizenship and Society” course, upon which both the University and the Association joined their efforts to maximize the students’ learning and sharpen their knowledge of the most important environmental issues.

The purpose of this collaborative work is to help initiate ambitious ecological projects that would benefit UA graduate and undergraduate students, by guiding them toward a deeper understanding of the recycling concept, offering them access to free training sessions and internship programs, as well as recommending industries or recycling companies with which students can collaborate. In return, UA will ensure the creation of a sub-unit for “STOP Plastique” at the University, as part of the already existing Green Club in Hadat–Baabda, Mejdlaya–Zgharta, and Nabi Ayla–Zahle Campuses.

The MOU was signed on February 15, 2022, at the Lady of the Seeds Monastery on UA’s Hadat–Baabda Campus, by the Rector, Fr. Michel Jalakh, and Ms. Eliane Edde, President of “STOP Plastique” Association. Members of both parties joined them for the signing event: Mr. Rami Sbeih, Chief Executive Officer of Plastc Lab, and from UA’s side, Fr. Jean Al Alam, Vice Rector for Integral Human Development (VRIHD); Dr. Dalal Moukarzel, Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication (FIC); Ms. Mouchira Hajj Moussa, Full-time Faculty Member; and Ms. Sandra Naccour, Assistant Director at the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).
