    04 July 2024

The Faculty of Sport Sciences (FSS) at Antonine University (UA) organized a panel discussion focused on the organization and development of the outdoor sports sector, under the patronage of the Ministries of Environment, Youth, and Sports, and Tourism. The event, held at UA’s Hadat–Baabda Main Campus, was attended by notable figures including the UA Rector, Fr. Michel Saghbiny; Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Nasser Yassin; and representatives of the Ministers of Youth and Sports and of Tourism. Also present were former MP Ghassan Moukheiber, municipal heads, municipal council members, representatives of sports associations, and members of sports and mountain federations, particularly the Lebanese Federation of Sports Climbing and Mountaineering.

In his address, Fr. Saghbiny highlighted the importance of organizing outdoor sports, especially mountain hiking. He emphasized the pivotal role played by the University’s specialized undergraduate program launched over a year ago. Fr. Saghbiny noted that this panel discussion is part of ongoing efforts to legislate and modernize these sports, transforming them into thriving professions that contribute to sustainable development, boost eco-tourism, and positively impact the economy. This transformation, he asserted, can be achieved through collaborative efforts involving the University, federations, municipalities, and relevant national bodies.

The Minister of Environment affirmed that UA’s initiatives represent the right approach toward effective management of protected areas. He stated, “We cannot only admire our nature as a beautiful picture and rejoice in the green Lebanon; it is crucial to learn how to manage these natural sites.” Dr. Yassin underscored the significance of professional management in preserving Lebanon’s natural heritage.

The discussions also highlighted the positive impact of sports and the environment on the physical and mental health of various Lebanese society segments. Two main themes dominated the discussions: the legal regulations governing outdoor sports and the essential role municipalities play in developing these activities. Presentations covered regulatory laws that aim to establish sports associations and federations and to organize these sports and the mountain guide profession, given their importance and their impact on the national economy.

The panel discussion concluded with contributions from attendees representing various sectors involved in these sports, including tourism officials, mountaineers, sports associations, and mountain federations.
