  • UA Celebrates IEEE Day with Mini-football and Streetball Competition

    25 October 2023

IEEE Day is an annual event celebrated by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and its members worldwide. It serves as an opportunity for IEEE members and local communities to come together, share ideas, and celebrate their passion for technology and engineering. Traditionally held between October 5 and 15, IEEE Day has become a significant date for technology enthusiasts across the globe.

Recognizing the importance of IEEE Day, the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) at Antonine University (UA) decided to mark the occasion by hosting an exciting sports competition on October 7, 2023, at UA’s Hadat–Baabda Campus. This event, organized in collaboration with the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Lebanon Chapter and UA IEEE Student Branch, was expertly managed by the Faculty of Sport Sciences (FSS) students, adding an extra layer of enthusiasm and expertise to the proceedings.

The event kicked off at 9:30 AM and brought together 16 mini-football teams and 12 streetball teams, representing various universities and communities, including the UA IEEE Student Branch, IEEE ComSoc Lebanon Chapter, IEEE Young Professionals, Lebanese University (LU), Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), Université La Sagesse (ULS), American University of Beirut (AUB), Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), Beirut Arab University (BAU), and City University (Cityu).

As the sun set on an action-packed day of a 6-hour competition, the deserving winners emerged. FOE and FSS faculty members, including Prof. Hadi Kanaan, Prof. Jacques Demerjian, Dr. Chady Abou Jaoude, and Dr. Zahi Chami, had the honor of presenting trophies and medals to the outstanding teams. In the mini-football category, UA teams showcased their prowess by claiming the first and second positions, with NDU-LU Tripoli securing third place. In the streetball category, the USEK team won first place, followed by the LU Roumieh team in second place, and UA in third place.

The event served as a reminder of the value of camaraderie, teamwork, and a shared passion for technology and engineering. The participants displayed not only their athletic abilities, but also their dedication to their respective institutions and the broader IEEE community.
