The timeless power of opera met the grandeur of Lebanon’s heritage as Georges Bizet’s “Carmen,” the world’s most performed and cherished opera, captivated audiences at the Baalbeck International Festival on July 25 and 26, 2025.
Under the stars and among the ancient Roman columns of the Temple of Bacchus, this new production emerged as a breathtaking celebration of music, drama, and cultural pride — and Antonine University (UA) played a significant role in bringing this masterpiece to life.
A Vision Brought Home by Jorge Takla
At the heart of this production was Jorge Takla, the world-renowned director born in Beirut, whose return to Baalbeck was as symbolic as it was inspiring. Takla, who began his artistic journey in 1974, crafted a staging of “Carmen” that was both visually striking and emotionally charged, a tribute to the resilience and creativity of Lebanon’s artistic scene. His vision transformed the timeless tale of love, jealousy, and freedom into an immersive experience, blending modern sensibilities with the opera’s fiery Spanish spirit.
A Cast of International Excellence
The performance featured an exceptional cast of celebrated international voices, including Marie Gautrot as the fiercely independent Carmen, Jérôme Boutillier as the charismatic Escamillo, Julien Behr as the tormented Don José, and Vannina Santoni as the tender Micaëla. Their powerful interpretations were accompanied by the Romanian Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose rich and dynamic sound gave Bizet’s score both precision and soul. Supporting roles were brought to life by Mira Akiki (Frasquita), Grace Medawar (Mercédès), Cesar Naassy (Zuniga), Fady Jeanbart (Morales), Philippe-Nicolas Martin (Le Dancaïre), and Jason Choueifaty (Le Remendado), each adding depth and color to the opera’s narrative.
Adding a layer of Lebanese talent to this grand production were local dancers, whose energy and authenticity infused the performance with unique vibrancy.
UA Choir and Maestro Toufic Maatouk in the Spotlight
Among the standout performers was the UA Choir, whose commanding presence and rich harmonies elevated the opera’s iconic choruses. Their voices resonated across the ancient ruins, weaving seamlessly with the orchestra and soloists to create moments of pure musical magic.
Guiding the entire musical experience was Toufic Maatouk, OAM, UA Choir’s own Maestro and a rising figure on the international opera stage. As musical director, Maestro Maatouk brought a refined, emotive interpretation of Bizet’s score, balancing its explosive energy with moments of haunting delicacy. His leadership not only underscored the technical brilliance of the performers but also infused the production with a depth of feeling that kept the audience spellbound.
A Feast for the Senses
The visual design of the opera was equally remarkable. Jean-Louis Mainguy served as artistic advisor, while Anselmo Zolla’s choreography and Jonas Soares’ scenography elevated the dramatic scenes with a sense of movement and atmosphere. Rabih Kayrouz, celebrated for his distinctive fashion creations, designed the costumes with elegance and a contemporary edge, while renowned Lebanese artist Nabil Nahas lent his mastery to the visual elements, adding layers of color and texture that perfectly complemented the music and storytelling.
A Night to Remember
The “Carmen” performances at Baalbeck were more than just an opera; they were a celebration of artistic collaboration, where international and Lebanese talents came together to create something truly extraordinary. For Antonine University, the participation of the Choir and Maestro Toufic Maatouk was a proud moment, reaffirming the University’s enduring commitment to the arts and to nurturing world-class talent.
As the final notes of Bizet’s iconic score echoed into the night, the audience was left in awe — not only of the beauty of the opera itself but also of the collective effort that made these performances an unforgettable highlight of Lebanon’s cultural calendar.
