History

It all started when Fr. Elie Abdel Masih created the Antonine Sports Club, which serves as the foundation of the Faculty of Sport Sciences. The Antonin Sports Club had clear objectives, and that is to train champions, to promote the Antonine values through physical activities, and to contribute to the development of the Lebanese sports field through physical education. We can identify three periods that describe the evolution of the Faculty of Sport Sciences at the Antonine University (UA).

First Period: Institute of Physical and Sports Education

The Institute of Physical and Sports Education was created in 1996. The objective behind this institute was to attract athletes and sports enthusiasts to develop a new generation of physical and sport educators. Serge Raffi, who was the first director of this institute, formed the first instructors’ body from both national and international instructors. February 6, 1998, the Ministry of Education in Lebanon legalized the Teaching Diploma in Physical Education and Sport. In 2008, the national Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sport legalized a University Diploma in Sports Coaching and the specialized diploma in DEA en sciences du sport, as well.

Second Period: Reorganization

A new era for the faculty began on September 20, 2013. Due to the reorganization required by the Ministry of National Education, the Institute of Physical Education and Sport had to change its system to the LMD system (Bachelor's degree, Master's Degree, and Doctoral Degree,) even though the Doctoral Degree is not yet available. After the reorganization, the academic path of the Bachelor of Art in Physical Education and Sport constituted of two common academic years followed by a third specialization year. Three fields of study are available for the students to specialize in Sports Training, Sports Management, and Motricity Education and Adapted Physical Activities. UA also offers a Teaching Diploma in Physical Education and Sport as well as the Master of Art in Sport Sciences.

Third Period: Faculty of Sport Sciences

In 2016, the Institute of Physical Education and Sport became the Faculty of Sport Sciences. The first dean of the faculty was Dr. Zeina Mina, and the faculty became available on the Nabi Ayla–Zahle Campus in 2015 and Mejdlaya–Zgharta Campus in 2018. After offering the European University Diploma for Physical Preparation, in partnership with Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1- France, the Faculty of Sport Sciences introduced the MBA in Sport Management program in partnership with École Supérieure de Gestion Paris – France. These partnerships internationalize the Faculty of Sport Sciences and are key to enhancing the research development at the faculty and its image in the scientific community.
