We, as members of the academic community, are witnessing unprecedented changes that are radically altering our world. Decades of experience as instructors, researchers, and leaders have shown that traditional approaches are no longer enough.
We need to reconceptualize how societies create, share, and apply knowledge in an era of speed and interconnection. Building on this vision, UA is committed to concrete initiatives that translate our principles into practice. These initiatives are centered on four transformative pillars that will guide our efforts to equip students, instructors, and the wider community with the skills, perspectives, and ethical grounding needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
Investment in Technology for Human Flourishing
First, as heirs to the Eastern Churches’ venerable monastic tradition, we see in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies a tremendous opportunity to enhance human learning, discovery, and creation. Guided by our Catholic identity, we uphold that technology must serve to expand human potential rather than replace it. Rooted in our heritage, we aim to integrate AI in education in ways that enrich learning, strengthen research, and preserve our patrimonial legacy.
Our goal is to equip students to harness AI responsibly and to grasp its multilayered implications, preparing them to become ethical leaders in a technology-driven world.
Integration of International Perspectives Into Every Dimension
Second, we are redefining international collaboration.
At UA, internationalization is embedded in learning, research, governance, and community engagement. We build lasting partnerships that unite instructors, researchers, and students worldwide, and focus on shared challenges, especially in the Mediterranean Basin. Spread over six continents, the Lebanese diaspora provides a bridge of expertise that enhances our academic programs and research. These diverse perspectives equip graduates to combine global thinking with local action, which multiplies UA’s impact.
Transformation of Education to Fit Modern Lives
Third, we envision learning that adapts to life’s rhythms rather than being confined to fixed times and spaces. Education should be a lifelong companion that offers flexible programs suited to varied schedules and career goals. Students can transition easily between full-time study and targeted skill development. The living lab, an interactive space where learners collaborate in real time with industry experts, researchers, stakeholders, and authorities, locally and globally, at their own pace, embodies the core of this vision.
Commitment to Knowledge That Makes a Difference
Fourth, UA seeks to overcome traditional disciplinary boundaries to tackle today’s interconnected challenges. By combining theoretical and practical, academic and experiential, local and global expertise, research and teaching are aligned with real societal needs. Knowledge proves most valuable when it builds equitable societies, manages complex transitions, generates sustainable environmental solutions, and fuels innovations that serve genuine human needs.
